Serena Carter

In the last few months my father has had a number of autosomal DNA matches with descendants of Serena Carter. Her children were very prolific.  Is Serena Isaac and Sarah Redman Carter's daughter? Is she Ezekiel's (my father's direct ancestor) sister or half-sister? Most researchers agree that she is Issac's(including myself) and I want to present our evidence here.

Serena first appears in the 1850 US Census as a Free Inhabitant in Ashby District in the County of Fauquier, State of Virginia, visit #444, family #453:

James P Utterback     35 M W Laborer VA
Serena "                     27 F W                VA
Margarett  "                 8 F W                VA
Almoranda "                5 F W                VA
William  "                    3 M W               VA
Alphius "                  4/12 M W             VA
Arthur Carter             16 M W Laborer VA
Allen Carter               12 M W               VA

Interesting that visit #443, family #452 is Zekial Carter and Malinda Redman (Isaac's son and my father's ancestor).
Also interesting are the two Carter boys. They are too old to be Serena's sons, at least Arthur is and if the ages are correct. Arthur and Allen are the subject of another story I need to do "Which Isaac Dennis did Peggy Carter sue for support of her bastard children, and is Peggy also Isaac's and Sarah's daughter?" (Teaser - yes, the DNA shows that Peggy's sons do not share YDNA with Isaac's descendants but do they do share autosomal DNA with some of Isaac's descendants).

In 1860 US Census, South West Revenue District in the County of Fauquier, State of Virginia, Post Office Salem, dwelling 571, family 550:

James P Utterback       43 M Farmer 200 250 VA

Serene "                         16 F   "                       VA
Wm   "                           12 M                          VA
Alpheus "                       10 M                         VA
Sally        "                       8 F                           VA

In the 1870 Census, First Revenue District in the County of Fauquier, State of Virginia, Post Office: Warrenton, dwelling 1021, family 1017:

Alphies Utterback 18 M W Home                     VA
Sallie Utterback    14 F W    "                            VA
Anna Utterback       7 F W   "                            VA

In the 1880 Census, Marshall District, in the County of Fauquier, State of Virginia,
dwelling 314, family #321:

Jas P Utterback          W M 63                    Farmer           VA  VA  VA
Serene Utterback       W F  45                    Housekeeping VA  VA  VA (note that no relationship is entered and neither Single, Married or Widowed is checked)
Alpheus Utterback     W M 26 Son Single                         VA  VA  VA
Anna Utterback          W F 18 Daughter -                          VA  VA  VA

(Note: In 1880 Eliza Carter lives in dwelling 313, family #320. Descendants of Eliza also share autosomal DNA with Isaac's descendants.)

The above four census entries are the only ones I have been able to find for Serena.

Now there are other items to add to her timeline. The first one is a case from Fauquier Chancery Court. "that Serena Carter of the said county on the 10th day of March in the year 1860 in the county aforesaid, two dry hides of the value of six dollars of the goods and chattel of Joseph A Roysten, then lately before stolen, taken and carried away feloniously, did by and received, she the said Serena Carter then and well knowing the said goods and chattels to been feloniously stolen taken and carried away against the peace & dignity of the commonwealth of Virginia."
"Whrereas, J A Roysten of said county has this day made complaint & information on oath before me W J Morgan a Justice of the said County, that Serana Carter on the    day June 1860 in said county, did feloniusly receive two beef hides of the value of six dollars of the goods and chattles of the said J A Roysten which said goods and chattles were lately before feloniously taken, stolen, and carried away from the said J A Roysten, she the said Serena Carter, well knowing the said goods and chattels to have been feloniously taken, stolen & carried away: these are therefore, to command you in the name of the Commonwealth of Va forthwith to apprehend the said Serena Carter and bring her before me or some other Justice of said County to answer the said complaint and to be farther dealt with according to law.             The condition of the above recognizance is such that if the above bound Serena Carter do and shall personally appear on the 26th day of November 1860 before the county court of the said county at the courthouse thereof, and then and there answers a bill of indictment to be (??? to the grand jury and for the same county against her the said Serena Carter for a misdemeanor by her committed for unlawfully."

The Comonwealth of Virginia,

to appear before the Justices of our County Court of Fauquier county, at the court-house of said county, on the 26th March, 1861 to testify and the truth to speak on behalf of "us" in a certain matter of controversy, depending and undetermined in said court between us and Serena Carter defendant.

The Comonwealth of Virginia,
To the Sheriff of Fauquier County - Greeting:

You are hereby commanded to summon Arthur Carter and Alverna Carter.  (note - bolds are my emphasis)

to appear before the Justices of our County Court of Fauquier county, at the court-house of said county, on the 26th November, 1860 to testify and the truth to speak on behalf of "defendant" in a certain matter of controversy, depending and undetermined in said court between us and Serenah Carter defendant.

The cover of this case notes that on 26th of Nov 1860 - not guilty, Refile and Issue and cont until to

27th of March - contd for deft & rule

28 Nov 1865 "dismissed by consent of parties by counsel"

Thank goodness,  Serena is not a convicted felon!

James Porter would have passed away before the next time we find Serena in court on 18th of Jul 1882. this is chancery court case Jett's Admr v Hirst & als,

"Your orator further shows unto your Honor that about the year 1862 said T M Hirst conveyed by deed of bargain & sale about 25 acres of land to one Porter Utterback but said deed has never been recorded, and bout the year 1862 said T M Hirst conveyed by deed or bargain & sale to one Smith Mahoney about 10 acres of land, but said deed has never been recorded." (note - Lydia Carter, mother of at least three of Alexander "Sandy" Jeffries' children in enumerated with Smith Mahoney in the 1870 census. Lydia is the daughter of Henry, half-brother of Serena).

"The only estate to which your orator can look for the payment of said balances is that in the possession of the purchasers herein before recited. Porter Utterback hath departed this life unmarried & intestate & without any personal estate, and no one as far as your orator is advised has qualified as his administrator. His heirs at law are his brothers & sisters viz Lewis Utterback, Elizabeth wife of John Goulding, Benedict Utterback, Elias Utterback, and the unknown heirs of Drucilla Utterback deceased. The said 25 Acres of land is as your orator advised & avers in the possession of Serena Carter, Alpheus Utterback, Wm Utterback, Rina Utterback, Margaret Utterback & Wash Moor & Sally his wife. Your Orator is advised and avers that it will be necessary to sell all of the several tracts of land herewith before mentioned to discharge the balance due to him under his said decree and being without remedy save in your Honors Court of Chancery he prays that T A Hirst, Smith Mahohoney, the heirs at law of Utterback above recited and the persons in possession of said real estate as above named purchase by said Utterback may be made partie’s defendant hereto & be summoned on oath to answer each & every allegations hereof as if specially interrogated thereto."

So Porter Utterback departed this life unmarried and Serena and several of her children will have to move.

I have not yet found Serena in the 1900 census so did she pass away between 1882 and 1900? Did she become a housekeeper in another man's house and thus was ennumerated with his surname? Maybe another researcher will find the answer.

Serena's descendants share autosomal DNA with descendants of Henry, Ezekiel, Eliza and Alverna Carter, in addition to children of Peggy Carter who may be Issac's daughter.

Serena's children tended to marry their cousins. Serena's children stayed in Fauquier after the war while many of Isaac's descendants went to Maryland. They still married their cousins in Montgomery county, MD but not as often as Serena's did in Fauquier. Ezekiel was in Baltimore earlier than any others (1864), with four of his youngest children. The girls married, two to men from Virginia, Rovilla to a man from Germany. Richard, (my father's great-grandfather), well he is also the subject of an entire blog, married a woman from Delaware but fathered his son (dad's grandfather_ with a young girl whose family also lived at what is today Oregon Ridge. Ezekiel and Malinda were there in 1880. Richard was too according to the divorce proceedings of his first wife.

One footnote: Isaac's father is not, I repeat, not, the son of Elijah Carter as many family tree users on ancestry indicate. Yes the name Elijah Carter is on Isaac's marriage record to Sally Redmond but look at the top of the form, it states Elijah Redmond. Also, at the bottom it states Elijah Redmond.

Two out of three. Does this prove Isaac is not Elijah's? Maybe, maybe not. But let me add a fact. Three proven descendants of Isaac Carter have had their Y-DNA tested at the 67 marker level. They do not match the Y-DNA of Elijah Carter's descendants. Therefore, Elijah is not Isaac's biological father. He may be his grandfather or his step-father, but Elijah is not Isaac's biological father. Isaac's descendants match no other Carters who have yet had their Y-DNA tested and do not match any other surname close enough to start looking for a probable father for Isaac.

If Elijah was Isaac's father why isn't he on Isaac's first marriage to Lydia Newstead?

A plea to all of Serena's descendants who have had their DNA tested at ancestry.com. Please upload your raw DNA results to gedmatch, com or familytreedna.com. It is free to use the basic services, We need to be able to triangulate our matching DNA and it can only be done at gedmatch.com or familytreedna.com.
